Volunteers are the backbone of Special Olympics throughout the world. Their generosity of time, energy, knowledge, and experience allows Special Olympics D.C. to provide quality training and competitions for the athletes it serves.

Often times, a volunteer’s gift is reciprocated through the interactions with the Special Olympics athletes. Following a competition or a sports season, many volunteers express gratitude for the privilege of serving athletes who are inspiring, friendly, determined, and kind.

There are volunteer opportunities in a variety of different areas including:

  • Summer Games, Fall Sports Classic, and Winter Sports Classic roles in competition management, awards and opening ceremonies, and support operations

  • Coaching Special Olympics athletes

  • Becoming a member of a Unified Sports® team which is composed of a proportionate number of participants with and without (called partners) intellectual disabilities

  • Filling a management role on a Games Management Team for one of the three SODC multi-sport championship events

  • Serving on an SODC fund raising special event committee

  • Providing assistance to SODC on projects involving technology, fund raisers, resource support, and other areas
