Coach Code of Conduct

I will adhere to the mission of Special Olympics and encourage meaningful participation for all athletes;

I will abide by the official rules and policies set forth by Special Olympics District of Columbia and Special Olympics, Inc.;

I agree to be responsible for my assigned athletes while travelling to and from, as well as during, Special Olympics events and activities;

I will dress appropriately at all times to set a good example for the athletes;

I will abstain from drinking alcoholic beverages and from smoking while involved with any Special Olympics activity;

I will become familiar with the medical history and types of medications for the athletes for whom I have responsibility;

I will follow written and verbal instructions of Special Olympics officials at all times;

I will familiarize myself with safety, first aid, and emergency procedures for Special Olympics;

I will participate in training sessions on how to effectively work with people with intellectual disabilities;

I am over 18 years of age;

I will familiarize all of the athletes assigned to me with the athlete’s pledge and stress the importance of upholding that pledge.

I, the undersigned, have carefully read the above responsibilities and stipulations to be a head coach in the Special Olympics District of Columbia program. I understand that a Special Olympics event begins when an athlete is entrusted to me for the purpose of Special Olympics related activities. I agree to conduct myself in accordance with the above stipulations and to assume the responsibilities as described.

I further agree that any failure on my part to meet my responsibilities may result in my immediate expulsion from Special Olympics District of Columbia with any subsequent related expenses to be borne by myself.
