Benefits

Children and adults with intellectual disabilities who participate in Special Olympics develop improved physical fitness and motor skills, greater self confidence, and a more positive self-image. They grow mentally and socially and through their involvement, constantly demonstrate courage while experiencing joy in sharing their gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.

Research commissioned by Special Olympics, Inc. has shown that individuals with intellectual disabilities experience a higher degree of health issues and are often not included in society. Participation in Special Olympics helps athletes to become healthier and more involved in their communities.

Ricardo Thornton, Special Olympics athlete since 1971, on the benefits of his involvement.

“It is great to be a part of a sports experience. It has brought out the best in me as an individual. I have learned how to be a good athlete, a good person, and have been shown my abilities by my family, friends, coaches, and other Special Olympics athletes. I have made some very good friends over the years. I am thankful for all the sponsors that have given us these opportunities.”
